Fashion Spotlight: Pure + Privé Spring/Summer 2014 Leather Collection

I had the pleasure of interviewing Newton'Enis Henry Swader IV, Founder/Designer of Pure + Privé (pronounced Pree-vay), a jewelry and lifestyle brand company that was launched in 2012.  Hearing Newton'Enis' story about how his business got started was so inspiring.  As he explained the scenario of using his last $20 to put gas in his car in order to meet up with a denim distributor in downtown Los Angeles, who ultimately never showed up, it was quite evident that fate had its own plan in mind.  Just as he was coming to grips with his inability to draw a profit from his first fashion endeavor (Faith Works Clothing Co.), he literally stumbled upon his next endeavor that day when something told him to take a stroll through the garment district instead of going back to his car and heading back home. Feeling disappointed, and literally penniless, he tried to walk it off and came upon a store that carried beads.  He entered the store thinking he could find some beads for a prayer bead bracelet design he had come up with, but instead, met the owner and spoke to him in depth about making jewelry with beads and how he too had spent his life savings on his business.

The rest was history because shortly after meeting that man, Newton'Enis was being asked about the beautifully handcrafted pieces that he was wearing.  After a 'Point of Display' deal with Bloomingdale's fell through, he was approached by a Bebe clothing representative who wanted to purchase earrings from him, but wanted to put their name on it.  He knew in his heart that he wanted his craft to reflect his name and brand so he ended up declining that offer.  Still, God kept opening doors and Pure + Privé was born with a clear vision, trademark and identity all its own.  Newton'Enis explained that he "always wanted to stay a step ahead of everyone else, create classic pieces and never wanted to do what everyone else was doing."

The line currently features fine, handcrafted jewelry and more recently, he is in the development phases of adding optical (eyeglass frames), home and fragrance lines to his growing lifestyle brand. He has also  already introduced leather handbags for women and backpacks for men via his Privé Collection that boasts plush leather materials accompanied by fine hardware details and design.

When asked about his creative process he admits that when he sits down to create, the environment can be hectic, yet he seeks to make an, "art piece", instead of just jewelry and "lets each collection take its own shape and theme".  He and I have very similar tastes as we both love David Yurman (one of his style inspirations) along with Ralph Lauren and Armani.  Although the attitude changes from collection to collection, the common theme between them all is that they are fueled by pure passion, inspiration and a keen thirst to make his brand legendary.  He explained to me that, "If you're going to do something, pick someone who does it best and come for their throat."

Pure + Privé has a total of 5 collections (City, Nights, Vintage, Lifestyle, Leather) and will soon include home, optical and fragrance in 2015.  Pure + Privé's Spring/Summer collection will officially launch on February 7th and will host a release party and birthday celebration for Newton'Enis at the Beverly Wilshire hotel.

He expressed how proud he was to be one of the few young, urban heterosexual males making waves in the fashion industry and noted, "there's not enough of us".  I asked him what he would tell his younger self if he had the chance to go back in time and he said he would stress, "no matter what, believe in you right now, pay more attention in school and don't dim your light to fit in, because in the end you gone be alright."

Although things are really picking up he confesses that he is still continually amazed at himself and his accomplishments thus far.  Swader IV told me a story about how he almost broke down in tears while shopping at the mall, walking around in his own brand.  His personal mantras for success are "Dream, believe, do" and "Be legendary".  The brand now has celebrity clients as diverse as Joey Lawrence, Charlie Wilson and model Mamadou Sall, just to name a few, and will soon be featured in choice high-end  department stores in Los Angeles.

Below are a few of his ads for previous collections:

His website is currently under construction, but you can take a peek at the new leather collection and also keep up with him on Instagram and Facebook:

Men's Spring 2012 Fashion Trends

Well, today is the first day of Spring and I thought it would be great to showcase some fashion for the male persuasion.  As I have said in the past, this blog has something for everyone so please feel free to suggest or request any specific topics or posts that you would like me to write about or speak to.

The weather in Los Angeles has been crazy sporadic and one literally must check the weather forecast daily to determine what type of clothing you will wear for the day.  As we have seen in 2012 Women's Fashion posts, color is all the rave!!!!  For men, bold spring/summer hues will be the standout for the season, as well as pastels and neutrals.  Denim never goes out of style, but what about incorporating denim shirts or blazers into your Spring/Summer wardrobe???

With men, its all about the shoes so I've selected a series of HOT styles that will transition your look from the beach or pool party, to a walk on the Boardwalk, all the way to a dinner date or club/lounge.
Spring is also ALL about accessories so I've also posted some pictures of the hottest accessories of the season that you should get your hands on pronto!  The best part about men's fashion is layering, so be sure to get your cool cotton separates, scarves and more to pair with blazers, sweatshirts, cargos and lightweight sweaters.

DISCLAIMER: I want to say this now before I get negative feedback from the men.  In no way do I want you to LOOK like these men in the pictures below.  The point of the pictures are to illustrate the HOT new trends and for YOU to cater it to your personal style.  I would never advise for someone to go and cop the entire outfit as displayed below, but please do incorporate the looks that speak to you into your signature style and upgrade your wardrobe for the season!!!! Any questions...feel free to ask below in the comment section.

Fashion Spotlight: Karl Kani Turns His Urban Legend Into Live Life Love Denim Brand

While sitting in a cafe in downtown LA this week I ran into none other than Karl Kani, the man responsible for creating and elevating urban wear to what it is today.  Many young folks may not be hip to his legacy, but before there was a Sean Jean or AKOO, Karl Kani was branding urban wear with a level of class and sophistication never before seen in "street clothes".  Initially working for Cross Colours in 1991 with his line known as Karl Kani, he later bought the name from Cross Colours and took off on his own.

I can vividly remember the emergence of the Karl Kani brand in the 90s and how he took the baggy denim/t-shirt look to another level with gold (metal) accents, rich fabrics and colors and premium denim.  Thanks to Karl Kani urban fashion will never be the same and has seen billions in profits since the onslought of this unique fashion genre.

Once I confirmed that it was him, I asked if he had any new lines he was working on and he introduced me to his Live Life Love Denim brand, which he founded in 2004.  Live Life Love Denim is a contemporary premium denim line that retails for about $50-$250 with gear for men and women.  Kani's Live Life Love Denim can be seen on celebs like Eddie Murphy, Ryan Seacrest, Halle Berry and Melanie Fiona to mention a few, and features bold hues and unique washes that are sure to garner a slew of compliments and admiration from your peers.  "LLLD consists of sleeker, slimmer, more refined silhouettes; contemporary and couture; artistic and intricate-all while maintaining his signature stamp of quality and acute attention to detail."

Kani also mentioned the fact that he was currently shooting a fashion reality show at FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising) next door.  I'm definitely impressed with what he has been able to accomplish thus far and believe he has a great product in his new line.  Live Life Love Denim is sold exclusively at Nordstrom, Atrium NYC, Fred Segal, Madison's and Barney's, but you can also purchase pieces from his online store at http://livelifelovedenim.com/online-store.  So if you're searching for cool gift ideas for your trendy and fashionable guy or gal, check out the brand online and in stores...HAPPY SHOPPING!!!!
Here are a few shots of the denim line:

Fashion Tips for Men

In previous fashion posts, I have focused more so on tips and information for the female persuasion, but I do have male readers and this blog is for everyone so I definitely wanted to touch bases with the men and provide input and direction wherever possible.  I have always loved men's fashion.  There is something so special about tailored suits, bow ties, cargo pants, fitted jeans, etc.  It used to be that men took the backseat when it came to fashion, but now men's fashion is much more than lids (fitted caps) and kicks (tennis shoes).  Fashionistos (male fashionistas) are showing out and incorporating more accessories, like intricate timepieces (not the iced out watches), exploring new and exciting color palettes, and rocking bow ties, fedoras, cardigans, etc. to spice up their looks.

There have been many transitions in men's fashion in recent years from urban gear to button ups, to skater chic, but the one common denominator is FITTED CLOTHING.  Long gone are the days where men with a 34" or 36" inch waist wore size 40 or 42 jeans.  The big bulky tees that reach down to the knees have been replaced with fitted v-neck or crew neck tees.  I know men are still sagging at alarming rates, but the distinguished gentlemen knows that no one wants to see his behind poking out of white boxer briefs. *gag*

The reality is, men are not the only ones who love to see the shape of the opposite sex.  Women like to see biceps and triceps bulging, well defined calves, stomach, and dare I say it, ass! lol  So men now need to jump on the bandwagon and drop the old baggy clothes and show off the shapes that they were blessed with.  If you have a nice button up that is XXL...please throw that ish in the trash or give it to the Goodwill so the 300 lb. man that actually needs it can wear it.  Even if you are not in the best shape, your shape is still better than a box, which is how most men look these days because their clothes are not tailored to their shape.

Men must accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative, just as women must do to get the most mileage out of their looks.  I know you men who are really a size large that are so stuck on your XXL tees and baggy pants, but the time has come to let go of the baggy/immature look.  I have provided some fashion pictorials below to give you an idea of how to upgrade your wardrobe and pull this look off...check it out:

Boris Kodjoe really got it right with this fitted pinstripe shirt, sexy fedora, leather belt and flat front-fitted khakis - perfect Spring/Summer look

Chris Brown looks so chic in a tailored military jacket, fitted-striped button up, grey skinny jeans and sporty kicks.  The glasses add an extra pop to the look!

There is nothing sexier than a man in khaki cargos, but they must fit properly.  Fabolous paired his cream khakis with a cream and blue trimmed v-neck sweater and high top leather kicks.  He looks comfy and stylish.

Jim Jones is usually known for sagging, but he got it right with this fitted grey sweater and jeans that are ON his waist and actually show off his silhouette.  I give it a thumbs up.

For the sporty guy! Kanye paired a fitted v-neck cardigan, fitted white tee and fitted jeans.  The white specs and Louis Vuitton wallet are nice touches.

Raheem Devaughn is channelling his B-Boy routes, but still keeping it fashionable, fresh and new.  He paired a fitted white v-neck tee, chunky black leather belt, blue nylon jacket and fitted dark blue jeans.  The aviators set this outfit off.

Trey Songz shows how you can look cool and comfy, but still chic and stylish.  He paired a blue fitted button up, blue and white striped crew neck tee underneath and blue fitted cargos. Perfect for the summer BBQ, the beach or the park.  The white wristwatch and sunglasses make the look complete.

My questions for the fellas:

Are you stuck on your baggy look?
Do you feel comfortable wearing fitted clothing?
Have you transitioned from the baggy look to the fitted look recently?  If so, have you received more positive feedback for doing so?

My questions for the ladies:

Do you like the looks in the pictorial above?
Do you wish you man wore more fitted clothing?
Is it hard to get your man to put down the baggy clothes and try new looks?
